At Forest Retreat Cottages, we know that holidays are even better when your dog comes too. Luckily, the Forest of Dean and nearby Wye Valley are packed with beautiful, dog friendly walks that both two and four legged guests will love. Whether you’re after peaceful woodland trails or riverside rambles, here are our top 5 local favourites.

1. Symonds Yat Rock & Riverside Trail

Distance: 2–5 miles (depending on route)
Start Point: Symonds Yat Rock car park

This classic Forest of Dean walk offers stunning views over the Wye Valley and plenty of sniff worthy paths for dogs. Start at Symonds Yat Rock viewpoint, then follow trails down through the woods to the riverside path. You can loop back via the hand pulled ferry (seasonal), or stick to forest trails for a longer adventure.

🐶 Dog Tip: Stop at the Saracens Head Inn, It’s very dog-friendly and right by the river.

2. Mallards Pike Lake Circular Walk

Distance: 1.5 miles
Start Point: Mallards Pike car park

A flat, easy walk around a beautiful lake perfect for older dogs or a relaxed afternoon stroll. There’s also a longer woodland trail (up to 5 miles) if your pup is full of energy. Plenty of shady spots and picnic areas make it a great all rounder for everyone.

🐶 Dog Tip: There’s a dog dip area, so you may want to bring a towel, many dogs love a splash in the lake!

3. The Sculpture Trail at Beechenhurst

Distance: 4.5 miles
Start Point: Beechenhurst Lodge

A walk with a twist! This route combines forest paths with unique sculptures hidden among the trees. Dogs love the variety of scents and sights, while humans enjoy the art and scenery. Shorter loops are available too.

4. Cannop Ponds & Cycle Trail

Distance: 2–3 miles
